The Permian Extinction’s Warning: Can We Avoid Earth’s Sixth Great Dying?

Let me tell you about the worst day in Earth’s history. And no, I’m not talking about the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. That was bad, don’t get me wrong, the dinosaurs had a rough weekend. The Permian extinction? That was a horror movie that lasted 60,000 years.

We call it the “Great Dying.” About 252 million years ago, something like 90% of all life on this planet simply vanished. Not just dinosaurs, they came later. I’m talking about trilobites, giant dragonflies, coral reefs the size of cities, entire forests of seed ferns. Gone. Poof.

And here’s the part that keeps me up at night: it didn’t happen because of a single asteroid. It happened because of a cascade of small failures that looked harmless at first. Sound familiar?

A Quick Look in the Rearview Mirror

I spent years flying over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in an OV-10 Bronco, alone, as all FACs did. The mission was me, the airplane, and God once I crossed the fence into Laos or Cambodia. No wingman. No backup. Just my training, my eyes, and the constant, life-saving habit of looking for patterns that didn’t belong. A muddy river here. A patch of disturbed leaves there. Small clues that added up to a convoy of trucks.

The Permian extinction is the same kind of pattern, just on a planetary scale. Here’s what scientists have pieced together.

It started with volcanoes. Not just any volcanoes, a series of massive eruptions in what is now Siberia. They spewed lava for hundreds of thousands of years, covering an area the size of Western Europe. And along with the lava came carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases.

Now, you might be thinking, “Okay, volcanoes happen. What’s the big deal?”

The big deal is what happened next. Those gases warmed the planet by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. That might not sound like much, but remember: we’re already seeing catastrophic effects from just 2 degrees of warming today.

But wait, it gets worse. That warming triggered something called methane hydrates. These are frozen pockets of methane sitting on the ocean floor. Think of them like giant frozen burritos full of explosive gas. When the ocean warmed up, those burritos started thawing and releasing even more methane. And methane is about 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat.

So now you have a feedback loop: volcanoes warm the planet → warming releases methane → methane causes more warming → more methane releases. A cascade. A runaway train.

By the end, the oceans had turned acidic and lost most of their oxygen. The land was so hot that plants couldn’t photosynthesize. Rain fell as weak sulfuric acid. It took life 10 million years to recover.

The Scary Part: We’re Doing It Again

Here’s where I have to be honest with you. Everything I just described? We’re seeing the same fingerprints on today’s world.

We’re not erupting Siberian volcanoes, not yet, anyway. But we are pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a rate that’s actually faster than what happened during the Permian. Faster. Let that sink in.

We’re watching ocean temperatures rise. We’re seeing coral reefs bleach and die. We’re measuring oxygen levels dropping in coastal waters, scientists call them “dead zones.” We’re seeing species vanish at a rate that geologists are already calling the sixth mass extinction.

The only difference between us and the Permian is time. Back then, the cascade took tens of thousands of years to unfold. We’re compressing it into centuries. Maybe decades.

But Here’s the Hope

I didn’t survive combat missions by panicking. You can’t panic when you’re pulling 4 Gs out of a 60-degree dive, or when you’re at Bingo fuel over hostile territory with rifle ammo nearly gone. You trust your training. You trust the Martin Baker seats. You trust that the habits you drilled into yourself will take over.

And I’m not going to panic now. But I am going to tell you something that might sound strange: the Permian extinction isn’t just a warning. It’s also a roadmap.

Think about it. Scientists were able to figure out what happened 252 million years ago by studying rocks, fossils, and chemical signatures. They identified the feedback loops. They pinpointed the tipping points. They saw exactly where the cascade became unstoppable.

That means we know what to look for today. We know that methane hydrates are starting to thaw in the Arctic. We know that permafrost is releasing carbon. We know that forest fires in California and Australia are adding millions of tons of CO2 to the air. We know the warning signs.

And knowing is half the battle, I don’t care how cliché that sounds. In the OV-10, knowing that Charlie liked straight lines kept me alive. Knowing that muddy water meant trucks kept me alive. Knowing my Bingo fuel number kept me alive.

Can We Avoid It?

Here’s my honest answer: maybe. But only if we stop pretending this is someone else’s problem.

In the cockpit, I learned that you don’t survive by hoping the anti-aircraft gunner misses. You survive by changing your flight path before he pulls the trigger. You survive by acting on the small clues early. You survive by never flying straight and never assuming the intel is right.

No matter what headquarters said in Saigon, I had to make the target decisions. I had to obey the ROEs, but I also had to trust my own eyes. You can’t call Saigon when you’re at 2,000 feet and Charlie is tracking you. You make the call. You live with it.

We need that same mindset for climate change.

We have the clues. We have the technology, solar, wind, thorium nuclear, regenerative farming, electric vehicles, carbon capture. The toolbox is full. What we don’t have is the will to act like we’re in a crisis. Because we are.

The Permian didn’t die because of one bad day. It died because a thousand small failures added up to an extinction machine. We’re building that same machine right now, one decision at a time.

But here’s the thing about machines: you can unbuild them. You can throw a wrench in the gears. You can change course.

I flew through flak that should have killed me. I made it home because I trusted my training and I trusted my eyes. Today, my eyes are telling me the same thing they told me over the Ho Chi Minh Trail: the pattern is there. The river is turning brown. The convoy is moving.

The question isn’t whether we see it. The question is whether we’ll act, whether we’ll drop down and take a look, whether we’ll call in the strike, whether we’ll make the decision ourselves instead of waiting for someone else, before the cascade becomes unstoppable.

Because the Great Dying isn’t just ancient history. It’s a dress rehearsal. And we’re the ones writing the next act.
